After the first round of The Great Western Uniform Bracket 2011, 4 teams have emerged as second-round challengers to the top four seeds. Arizona State, Washington, Colorado and Cal all won their opening match-ups and will move onto the divisional semifinals. The voting results appear below:
Colorado, as shown above, enjoyed what was easily the most comfortable victory, thanks in large part to get-out-the-vote efforts from AllBuffs.com and The Ralphie Report. Colorado won the most votes of any of the first-round teams, followed by (in order) Cal, Arizona State, and Utah. (Washington, despite its win against Oregon State, earned the second-fewest number of votes of any team in the first round.)
The Golden Bears received the Twitter endorsement of the Cal Athletics account, which helped the Berkeley faithful win their pairing and grab the runner-up spot for total votes. Elsewhere in the Pac-12 blogosphere, The Upset Blog and Arizona Desert Swarm used Twitter to encourage voting. As always, thanks go to those sites and the many individuals (all of whom are now prize-eligible) who helped spread word of voting on Twitter, Facebook, email and even–gasp!–by mentioning the bracket to a fellow human being in face-to-face conversation.
The results of the action leave us with 4 more lines of the bracket filled and with second-round contests now clear:
The second round presents a new set of intriguing questions, as it incorporates the tournament’s top 4 teams into the bracket after first-round free passes. In the North, Cal forced a uniform voting Big Game by moving past the Cougars to draw rival Stanford. The voting block of Colorado faces a tough challenge in Round 2, when the Buffs will have to defeat USC to move to the divisional final against the winner of UCLA-Arizona State. And don’t forget about Oregon, whose wide array of uniforms goes up against the Huskies in the other North division couple.
Second round voting will begin on Monday, giving fans a chance to return from a summer weekend away before supporting their teams.
Remember that interaction with us on Twitter, Facebook or in the comments section on any Great Western Uniform Bracket post enters you to win our prize at the end of the tournament. Given the buzz the first round generated on social media, the talk should be even more fun in the second round.
Thanks again to everyone who voted, and don’t forget to cast your new votes come Monday morning!
