In their few short minutes in front of the press on Tuesday’s Pac-12 Media Day, quarterback Andrew Luck and head coach David Shaw didn’t offer up much information we hadn’t known about when the day began. Some of the most memorable tidbits from the presser are here:
- Luck says he views the 2011 season as his last in college football. Although he will finish his degree this year, he would be eligible to return for his final college season in 2012 if he so desired.
- Luck’s beard may have reached the evolutionary stage at which it develops a brain. A reporter in attendance asked Luck if he was going for “a Brian Wilson thing,” to which Luck responded by saying that he’ll shave when he gets bored of the facial hair.
- Shaw tells senior wide receiver Chris Owusu that he needs to play every game. Precautions have and will be taken to ensure that he stays fresh for Saturdays.
- Shaw believes that although he is not as vocal as former head coach Jim Harbaugh, he brings the same energy and “fight” to the team that the head of the 49ers delivered during his time in Stanford Stadium.
- Luck said he has no regrets about staying at Stanford rather than leaving for the NFL, saying that he can always improve in college.
- Shaw listed his father, Jon Gruden, Bill Callahan and Bill Walsh as has greatest coaching influences.
Media Day begins a nationwide press tour for Pac-12 football. Head coaches and select players will head to the East Coast for publicity in New York City and Bristol, Connecticut (ESPN headquarters) on Wednesday and Thursday.
