When Nike announced on Wednesday that Stanford would be one of nine college football teams to wear the company’s Pro Combat line for a game in the 2011 season, the Cardinal climbed a notch in the great ladder of the sports corporate branding ladder. Andrew Luck & Crew’s company on the Pro Combat line-up? Oregon, LSU, Ohio State, Michigan State, Georgia, Boise State, Army and Navy.
We don’t know exactly what the 2011 Pro Combat uniforms will look like, and we’ll have to wait a few weeks to see exactly what Stanford’s version will be for their November 26 game against Notre Dame (who themselves will be wearing some special get-ups when they face Michigan on September 10). We do know that Oregon showed off the 2011 line in the National Championship Game, and it didn’t look much different from the 2010 incarnation.
We also know that Stanford head coach David Shaw hinted at the possibility of more black jerseys back in March, leading the way for Nike to make the Stanford Pro Combat black. So we sent the design team to the lab and… voilà! A hypothetical preview of Stanford Pro Combat, based on the 2010 line and the black jerseys that Stanford wore against Wake Forest last September:
Tomorrow we’ll publish a close-up of the Pro Combat helmet. Please comment with suggestions, comments, and speculation on the new uniform.
