New Stanford football head coach David Shaw received the first recruit commitment of his tenure as head of the program. Virginia-based Alex Carter, a 6′ 1″ safety from Ashburn (Briar Woods High School) will be headed to Stanford in the fall of 2012 as the first member of the Card’s 2012 class.

Carter’s father, Tom Carter, was an outstanding free safety and three-year starter at Notre Dame before moving on to a career in the NFL. Despite an offer from Brian Kelly to play in South Bend, Alex chose Stanford. He received offers from, among other schools, Notre Dame, Cal, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Boston College, and Kansas State.

His highlight tape, featuring both offensive and defensive plays, appears here:

According to Rivals, Carter runs a 4.42 forty, has a 34″ vertical, and weighs 185 lbs. He holds an athletic profile similar to that of incoming freshman safety Wayne Lyons, a member of the Stanford recruiting class of 2011 that weighs 190 lbs, runs a 4.55 forty, and has a 31″ vertical from a 6′ 0″ frame. Although Carter will not even be able to sign an official and binding Letter of Intent until next February, the two could form an elite safety duo for the Cardinal around the 2013 or 2014 season.

This first commitment of the Shaw era should also help ease a primary anxiety of Stanford fans in the post-Harbaugh period: will Shaw, a much more reserved and cerebral coach than Harbaugh, have the Harbaughian ability to convince nationally recognized recruits to come to the Farm? While Shaw’s first class (2011 was still Harbaugh’s) is still months from fleshing out and currently only consists of one high school junior, that Carter has been sought after by many of the country’s top football factories bodes well for the future of football at Stanford.
