Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck, the engine behind Stanford’s juggernaut offensive attack this season, has decided to return to the Farm for the 2011 football season. Luck, who could have been the first overall selection in April’s 2011 NFL Draft, said today that he intends to finish his bachelor’s degree at Stanford, which he should complete by June 2012.

Luck’s return makes it slightly more likely that coach Jim Harbaugh will return, especially considering the reported distaste that Harbaugh has expressed toward the 49ers and the University of Michigan, his alma mater. Still, with the Miami Dolphins’ outrageous offer (somewhere between $7 million and $8 million per year, which would make him the highest paid coach in the NFL) Luck will probably be playing for a new head coach next fall.

Nevertheless, Luck’s return will help Stanford secure a coach for next season, whether that coach is Jim Harbaugh or someone entirely different. With the best quarterback in the country and an almost certain preseason top 10 ranking in the polls, Stanford should figure as a highly desired job for head coaching candidates throughout the US.

Luck finished second in this year’s Heisman Trophy voting, and will enter next season as the run-away preseason favorite to win the 2011 Heisman. If he does so, he will be the second Heisman winner in Stanford history and the first since Jim Plunkett won the award in 1970.

Luck passed up millions of dollars (around $50 million over the length of his rookie contract) and incredible fame to play one more season in the cardinal and white. So, in the spirit of a primetime football player with character (we’re looking at you, Cam Newton) enjoy this video highlights tribute to Andrew Luck.

And, before that, let’s all revel in how wrong Gene Wojciechowski was.
