Toby Gerhart ’10 signed with the Minnesota Vikings yesterday, in a 4-year deal worth around $3.8 million, $1.9 million of which is guaranteed. The former standout Cardinal halfback and Heisman runner-up last season closed the deal the day Viking training camp began, following Vikings coach Brad Childress’s urging. “Get here and get your mind right,” wrote Childress in a text to Gerhart on Thursday evening.
Despite leading the nation in rushing yards last season for the Card, Gerhart fought racial stereotypes (that cast undeserved skepticism toward a white running back) and underestimations of his speed in the NFL scouting and draft processes. Minnesota selected Gerhart with the 51st overall pick in the 2010 draft.
